Orkestra Futra - Invisible Art

April 13, 2012 -  8 pm
The Roundhouse Community Centre
Pacific and Davie St. in Vancouver

Director
Coat Cooke

A full-length evening concert for Voices/Electronics/Strings/Horns/Percussion. Focused on developing a personal improvisational vocabulary and process, this unique program features several exciting new works. The voice is the first human instrument and electronics the most recent and in this program Orkestra Futura explores the terrain between them.

The ensemble continues with its focus that includes emerging artists like Lee Hutzulak/electronics and Soressa Gardner/electronics and five highly trained vocalists veterans (DB Boyko, Christine Duncan, Viviane Houle and Peter Hurst).

Mix in the strings (Jesse Zubot/violin, Chad MacQuarrie/guitar, Tommy Babin/bass), horns (JP Carter, Coat Cooke/reeds), and percussion (Skye Brooks) for support and you have a truly modern ensemble with the capability to build from a strong foundation of tradition and set course for a blueprint of the future using modern composed forms at the beck and call of a world class improvising ensemble.

Orkestra Futura - Phoenix Rising

November 12, 2011 -  8 pm
The Roundhouse Community Centre
Pacific and Davie St. in Vancouver

Director
Coat Cooke

Special Guests
Joane Hétu & Rainer Wiens

Orkestra Futura’s Phoenix Rising will be an inspirational evening of sound and stories illuminating the human spirit’s infinite capability to overcome adversity and to shine and flourish despite the challenges that we all face in our lives.

We welcome Montréal composers Joane Hétu on saxophone and Rainer Wiens on guitar for this one-time evening of music. The concert will feature ten of Vancouver’s most inspiring improvisational musicians for a magnificent night of music as we premiere commissioned work from Ms. Hétu and Mr. Wiens.

Our ensemble will feature horns (Coat Cooke/reeds, JP Carter/trumpet, Brad Muirhead/bass trombone), strings (Chad MacQuarrie/electric guitar, Tommy Babin/bass), voice (DB Boyko/voice),  electronics (Chris Gestrin/keyboards, Lee Hutzulak/electronics) and percussion (Skye Brooks/drums).

The phoenix, with its great beauty, creates intense excitement and deathless inspiration. We explore this universal theme that offers hope for renewal.
